Uncovering careers in Data Science and Maths

Friday, 3 November, 2017 - 11:30 to 12:15

Businesses capture data and hidden in the data is a story that can help drive business forward – to get the winning edge, understand markets, base investment decisions on or keep track of sales. But how is that story found? By people with inquisitive minds, who like solving puzzles and have analytical skills to find patterns and trends in data. That is the role of a data scientist, which Harvard Business Review called the “sexiest job of the 21st century”. Come along and find out more about the skills needed to break through into this fascinating area.

Speaker:
Sophie Carr
M.D of Bays Consulting
Presentation Title:
Uncovering careers in Data Science and Maths
Bio:

Sophie is the managing director of Bays Consulting which she founded to share her enthusiasm that analysis is both fun and provides clarity. Having had a passion for aeroplanes from being young, Sophie initially studied Aeronautical Engineering before her first job sparked an unending interest in probability, which led to a Phd in Bayesian Belief Networks. Sophie’s career has seen her combine her maths and engineering skills to structure real world, messy problems across the public, private and charity sectors. Having been fortunate to work on a wide range of fun and interesting projects, Sophie uses analytics and statistical techniques to help clients find that trend, value, insight or nugget of information needed to progress business decisions.

Outside of analytical work, Sophie is a member of the OR Society, the Institute of Mathematics and Its Applications, the Royal Aeronautical Society and is both a Chartered Mathematician and Chartered Scientist.
